South Korea is something of a case study on how expanding the power of telecommunications networks will empower XR technology growth, which in turn spells economic growth. The nation is very nearly connected end-to-end by a cross-country 5G network, and Korea Telecom is hard at work taking advantage of that coverage to evangelize VR. Today, that’s watching VR videos on city busses; tomorrow? The sky’s the limit.
Joonmo Park, the telco’s new media manager, says that there have been 3 million subscribers to the multitude of 5G services since the network’s launch less than a year ago. And this is before seamless XR wearables are everywhere. Once AR glasses are as ubiquitous as smart phones today, those numbers are bound to rise exponentially.
